When Do Children Learn Each Speech Sound? A Developmental Norms Chart

A research-based chart of when children master each English speech sound, plus how to read the norms and when to seek help

One of the most common questions parents ask is simple: is my child supposed to be saying that sound by now? Speech sounds develop in a fairly predictable order, and decades of research give us a clear picture of when most children master each one. This guide turns that research into a practical chart you can use, whether you are a parent watching for milestones or an SLP explaining norms to a family.

The ages below come primarily from Crowe and McLeod (2020), a large review of consonant acquisition that analyzed 15 studies covering nearly 19,000 children in the United States. We have included full references at the end so you can read the original research.

How to Read a Speech Sound Norms Chart

Two ideas make these numbers much easier to understand:

The age is a finish line, not a deadline

When a chart says a sound is acquired at age 5, it means that by age 5 roughly 90 percent of children produce it correctly. It does not mean a child has until age 5 to start. Many children produce a sound earlier, and some take a little longer, which is still within the normal range.

Ages are written in years and months

Researchers write ages as years;months. So 3;6 means 3 years 6 months, and 5;0 means 5 years 0 months. We use that format in the chart and spell it out in the text so it stays clear.

Speech Sound Development Chart by Age

The chart below shows the age at which about 90 percent of children produce each English consonant correctly, based on Crowe and McLeod (2020). Sounds are written with a sample word so they are easy to identify.

Ages reflect the 90 percent acquisition criterion reported in Crowe and McLeod (2020). Individual variation is normal.

Early, Middle, and Late Developing Sounds

Crowe and McLeod (2020) also sorted the 24 English consonants into three groups. This is one of the most useful ways to think about speech sound development, because it tells you which errors are typical for a young child and which ones are worth watching.

Early developing (the early 13)

p, b, m, n, w, h, d, t, k, g, ng, f, y

These sounds are easiest to produce and come in first, generally between ages 2 and 4. They use movements children can see and feel, like closing the lips or tapping the tongue behind the teeth.

Middle developing (the middle 7)

v, j (jump), l, ch (chair), s, sh, z

These sounds usually settle in between ages 4 and 5 years 6 months. The /s/ and /z/ sounds belong here, which is why a lisp in a young child is often developmentally typical for a while.

Late developing (the late 4)

r, zh (measure), voiced th (this), voiceless th (think)

These are the last to arrive, often between ages 6 and 7. They are also the most common targets in speech therapy. If your child is still working on /r/ or the th sounds in kindergarten, that is usually within the expected range.

A helpful summary from the same research: by 3 years 11 months children typically produce all the plosives, nasals, and glides, by 4 years 11 months all the affricates, by 5 years 11 months all the liquids, and by 6 years 11 months all the fricatives. Put simply, most sounds are in place by age 4, and almost all are in place by age 7.

Intelligibility Matters as Much as Individual Sounds

Charts focus on single sounds, but how well a child can be understood in everyday speech is just as important. A widely used guideline is that an unfamiliar listener should understand roughly half of a 2 year old's speech, about three quarters of a 3 year old's speech, and nearly all of a 4 year old's speech, even if a few later sounds are still developing.

If a child is much harder to understand than these guidelines suggest, that is worth raising with an SLP even when the individual sound errors look age appropriate on a chart.

When to Consider an Evaluation

A norms chart is a guide, not a diagnosis. Consider talking with a speech-language pathologist if:

  • • Your child is still making errors on sounds well past the age when most peers have mastered them
  • • Unfamiliar listeners often cannot understand your child by age 4
  • • Speech errors are affecting your child's confidence or willingness to talk
  • • You notice many sound errors together, or speech that is hard to follow overall
  • • Your instincts tell you something is off, even if the chart looks fine

An SLP looks at the whole picture, including how a child produces sounds across many words, patterns in the errors, and how well the child is understood. Early support is helpful, and it is never too late to make progress.

Supporting Sounds That Are Still Developing

Once a child is working on a specific sound, whether on their own timeline or with an SLP, focused practice helps the new pattern become automatic. A few approaches that help at home:

Practice one sound at a time

Target a single sound in short, frequent sessions rather than correcting everything at once. Word lists organized by position make this easy to structure.

Model rather than correct

Instead of asking your child to say a word again, naturally repeat it with a clear target sound in your own speech so they hear the correct version.

Make home practice count

Practice between sessions is where speech sounds carry over into everyday talking.
