Best AI Speech Therapy Apps in 2026: An Honest Comparison

There is no single best app. There is a best app for your situation, and it depends on who is practicing and whether a therapist is involved.

Full disclosure: we build LumaSpeech, one of the apps on this list. To keep this comparison useful we organize by use case, stick to what each vendor documents on its own site or app store listing, and say plainly what LumaSpeech does not do. Where pricing is not published, we say so rather than guess.

“AI speech therapy app” now covers at least four very different products: apps a speech-language pathologist assigns and monitors, articulation games parents run at home, self-guided tools for adults who stutter, and adaptive rehab programs for adults after stroke or brain injury. Comparing them head to head is like comparing a gym, a physiotherapist, and a fitness tracker. So the first question is not “which app is best,” it is “which of these situations am I in?”

If an SLP is assigning the practice (and needs the data back)

This is the category where the differences are starkest, because most consumer apps simply have no therapist workflow at all. Verified against vendor documentation, three products let a clinician assign home practice and see results:

LumaSpeech (ours) is built around this loop. The SLP assigns articulation practice (word, sentence, or motor chaining, with phoneme-level feedback), reading with fluency shaping scored against the assigned technique and level (stretch timing, breath-group pauses, gentle onsets), or AI conversation practice where target sounds and techniques are tracked in spontaneous speech. Every attempt returns to the therapist as a recording with scores and analysis, and progress reports export to PDF for IEP meetings. To our knowledge, and we looked, no other app combines real-time AI feedback on both articulation and fluency with an SLP assign-and-review workflow. Honest limitations: it is a web app in early access, and today it is built for practice a therapist assigns rather than fully self-serve use.

Sara for SLP is a strong articulation-only alternative: the clinician app is free, assigns structured daily sessions to families, and auto-tracks production data into progress dashboards. The catch: it is iPad only, covers articulation only (23 sounds), and the family side is a separate $4.99/month consumer app. Constant Therapy also has a real clinician workflow, but for a different population entirely (more below).

If you are a parent running articulation practice at home

Three apps in this group use genuine speech recognition to score your child’s productions. SpeechLP (iOS, from $15/month) wraps articulation drills for ages 3 to 12 in voice-activated games with instant pronunciation feedback and sound-by-sound reports. Sara Speech (iOS, $4.99/month) generates short personalized sessions, detects errors automatically, and adjusts difficulty across word and phrase levels. Otsimo Speech Therapy (iOS and Android, from $6.99/month) covers the broadest range of needs, including delayed speech and nonverbal autism, with speech recognition feedback, though it is a consumer app with no therapist connection.

Speech Blubs deserves an honest asterisk: it is beloved for video modeling and voice-activated play for ages 1 to 8, but its own materials make no claim of AI articulation scoring, so treat it as engagement and imitation practice rather than feedback-driven drill. Whichever you pick, the evidence on home practice is consistent: short, frequent, and correct beats long and occasional. We cover how to structure it in speech therapy homework that works.

If you are an adult who stutters

Two dedicated consumer apps lead here. Stamurai offers the widest toolkit: 50+ exercises spanning fluency shaping, stuttering modification, and CBT techniques, plus delayed auditory feedback and self-recording. BeneTalk takes the opposite approach: one thing done well, real-time AI feedback on your speaking pace, wrapped in a community built by people who stutter. Neither connects to a therapist. LumaSpeech handles fluency shaping practice with per-take scoring when assigned by an SLP, and a self-serve version for adults is on the waitlist. If you want the technique background first, see our guides to at-home stuttering exercises and fluency shaping vs stuttering modification.

If you are recovering from stroke or brain injury

Constant Therapy ($29.99/month, iOS and Android) is the established option: adaptive speech, language, and cognitive exercises for adults with aphasia, TBI, or neurological conditions. Its AI adjusts exercise difficulty based on your performance and compares progress against similar users, and clinicians can build and monitor at-home programs. It is not an articulation or stuttering app; it is rehab software, and it is good at being exactly that.

If you want a human therapist in the loop, digitally

Expressable is not an AI app at all: it is teletherapy with licensed SLPs (live video sessions, insurance accepted, often $0 to $21 per visit) plus a practice portal where your therapist assigns weekly activities. Better Speech’s Jessica sits between categories: a conversational AI helper that assesses speech and gives feedback around the clock, sold alongside human teletherapy plans. If your situation needs assessment or a diagnosis, start in this category (or with a local SLP), not with a practice app.

Can AI replace a speech therapist?

No, and be wary of any product implying otherwise. Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning are clinical work. What AI is genuinely good at is the part human therapists physically cannot do: listening to every single practice attempt at home, giving feedback in the moment, and logging data that would otherwise vanish. The best results come from combining the two, which is the model every credible product in this space, ours included, is built on. How to choose, in one minute

  • Your child sees an SLP: ask the SLP to assign app-based practice they can monitor. LumaSpeech (articulation + fluency) or Sara for SLP (articulation, iPad)
  • Parent-led articulation practice: SpeechLP, Sara Speech, or Otsimo, all with real speech recognition
  • Adult who stutters, self-guided: Stamurai for breadth, BeneTalk for real-time pace feedback and community
  • Post-stroke or TBI: Constant Therapy
  • Need assessment or diagnosis: a human SLP first, via Expressable or a local clinic; add a practice app after
